Covid-19 Announcement

Our office is currently open and following social distancing measures. In order to ensure we aren’t overcrowding, we recommend scheduling an appointment by phone, email, or the tour scheduling feature on this website. Current residents can use the scheduler in the Resident Portal. In accordance with the County’s mask regulations, facial coverings are required in our office and in public places around our community. Thank you!

Volunteer UTA Student Housing

Summer can be a nebulous time for student residents of our UTA student housing. For those not taking summer classes or working at a summer job or internship, the free time of summer, while a lovely respite from the stress of classes, can sometimes be aimless, unstructured, and even lonely. That’s part of the reason we highly recommend volunteering during the summer.

Volunteering can be as much or as little of a time commitment as you want, and it helps provide structure, purpose, and social interaction where you might otherwise have none. Plus, volunteer work looks great on applications and makes great anecdotes for interviews. While helping others, you also help yourself, and you still have time to lounge in the sun (perhaps by our resort-style swimming pool). What could be better than that?

If you know someone in our community of student apartments in Arlington who needs something to do this summer or someone you’d like to volunteer with, be sure to share this post with them when you’re done reading. For now, let’s talk about volunteer opportunities!

Municipal Volunteer Program

The city of Arlington has several programs that wouldn’t exist without volunteers. Opportunities in the Parks & Recreation department and public libraries are perfect opportunities for students over the summer looking to give back to the community around UTA and our student apartments. Arlington is a great city to live in, and the government-run programs here are a big part of what makes it that way!

Meals on Wheels

You’ve probably heard of Meals on Wheels, but in case you haven’t, this non-profit program helps provide meals to people in need, especially low-income seniors. The non-profit has programs throughout the United States, and it’s easy to volunteer for just a couple hours out of your day. Volunteers typically need to use their own cars to deliver meals, however, so if you (or a friend you’re volunteering with) don’t have access to a car, there may be other opportunities that are better for you.

Elder Care

Another area where seniors often need volunteer help is in hospice care. Programs like Envoy Hospice are excellent opportunities for college students to donate their time to help with a variety of caregiving activities. In the words of Envoy Hospice, “Volunteers can provide: Companionship for Patients/Families, much needed Support, Listening, assist in light housework, run errands, read to patients, help create memory books for patients, provide much-needed respite for a Hospice Patient Caregiver, Assist Activity Director with fingernail painting, Games, Arts & Crafts, Events, Holiday Decorating, bring Patients a Teddy Bear, bring Hospice Patients a smile, etc.”

Crisis Counselor

If you’re looking for a way to volunteer remotely from the comfort of your apartments, UTA students are the perfect volunteers for crisis hotlines like the Crisis Text Line. Volunteering as a crisis counselor means being available over phone or text for folks that call a hotline in a moment of crisis. If you have a lot of compassion in your heart for people who may be anxious, depressed, or suicidal, this may be the opportunity for you. Programs like Crisis Text Line do often require a more long-standing commitment, but you may be able to complete all the necessary training in your PJs in front of your computer. Plus, knowing that you’re literally helping save peoples lives, and giving them an empathetic, listening ear when they need it most can be hugely fulfilling.

Which of these volunteer opportunities are you most excited about? We hope you’ll be inspired to grab a friend or neighbor and get out there to give back to the community!
